Essay on the Life of Bipin Rawat

General Bipin Rawat assumed the office of the Chief of the Army Staff on 31 December 2016, following the retirement of General Dalbir Singh. Bipin Rawat, the second youngest chief of army staff, was born on 7 December 1955.

He studied at St. Xavier’s School, Delhi and later at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. He was commissioned into the 7th Battalion of the 11 Gorkha Rifles in December 1974.

1. Introduction to Bipin Rawat

Bipin Rawat was born in a small town in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. After graduating from the Indian Military Academy, he quickly rose through the ranks, eventually becoming the Chief of Army Staff of the Indian Army in 2017.

He has been widely praised for his efforts to modernize the Indian Army and to improve soldier morale. He is married to Smt. Neelam Rawat and has two children.

2. Early Life

Born on 8 November 1934 in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, Bipin Rawat was given a strict and regimented upbringing by his father, Brigadier Gurdayal Singh.

With a focus on discipline and physical training, Bipin’s father ensured that his son was well-prepared for a future in the armed forces.

Although he showed an early interest in artillery, it was his father’s urging that led Bipin to choose the army’s elite Parachute Regiment as his branch of service.

3. Entry into the Army

When Rawat was only eighteen years old, he decided to join the Indian Army. It was during a time when India was going through a lot of turmoil and needed brave young men to defend the country.

He was soon after accepted into the prestigious Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. After completing his training, he was assigned to the 4th Garhwal Rifles as a Second Lieutenant.

He served with distinction in various operations and was soon promoted to the rank of Captain.

4. Career as a General

Rawat joined the army in 1980, and was commissioned in the artillery. He has had a distinguished career, and has held a number of key positions.

He has been the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Srinagar-based 15 Corps, the Director-General of Military Training and the Military Secretary at the Army Headquarters.

He is the recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, the Yudh Seva Medal, the Vishisht Seva Medal, the Sena Medal and the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) commendation card.

He is also an alumnus of the Indian Military Academy, the National Defence College and the Defence Services Staff College.

5. Misc. Achievements

Bipin Rawat has had a remarkable career, spanning more than three decades. He has been decorated with numerous awards, including the Gallantry Award, the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, and the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service.

He was also honored with the Shaurya Chakra, one of the highest military awards in India. In addition to his achievements in law enforcement, Bipin Rawat has also been recognized for his work in the field of human rights. In 2010, he was presented with the Humanitarian of the Year Award by the Indian Red Cross Society.
