It’s the World Cup with the most Blaugrana players ever

Barcelona and its players will play a big role at the World Cup.

The Blaugrana will be keeping a close eye on everything that happens in Qatar since 16 of its players will feature, 17 if Sergino Dest, who is on loan at AC Milan, is taken into account.

Injuries are the main concern for coaches and officials, who nevertheless see the record number of Barcelona players as confirmation of the talent and quality in the squad.

Of the 26 players called up by Luis Enrique, seven are from Barcelona. The coach finally decided to call up Ansu Fati, though Marcos Alonso and Balde have been left out.

“He was one of the doubts until the last minute,” said Enrique. “We bet on him before others, but Ansu’s level is unquestionable. He has gone through a difficult process and I had doubts until the last second.

“He has featured for his club but he isn’t a starting player at this point. I think returning to the team can motivate him, but there are doubts to clear. We’ll see during the World Cup.”

Among those chosen by the Asturian coach are several youngsters, as well as veterans. The Barcelona players chosen, in addition to the striker, are: Jordi Alba, Eric García, Busquets, Gavi, Ferran Torres and Pedri. The tactician noted that Pique was in contention, but isn’t on the final list.

The following players have also been called up by their respective nations: Dembele and Kounde (France); Frenkie de Jong and Memphis Depay (Netherlands), Ter Stegen (Germany), Christensen (Denmark), Lewandowski (Poland), Raphinha (Brazil) and Araujo (Uruguay). Sergino Dest, a Barcelona player on loan at Milan, will also be in Qatar.

Never before have the Blaugrana been so well represented at a World Cup. The previous record came in Russia 2018: 14. South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014 saw 13 players called up.

Now, in Qatar, there will be a record number, as counting Dest, there are 17. The Catalan club have wished the American good luck after being names to the US team, as they consider him one of their own.


Barcelona have congratulated the players that have been called up, but there is some concern over injuries, since several of them have struggled since the last international break: Memphis Depay, Frenkie de Jong, Kounde, Araujo…
